How Much Do You Know About Disease Prevention?
Your health and, disease prevention is all about you, and what you do about your life choices, and we make these choices every day from the time we wake up, until we fall asleep at night. Unfortunately, the choices that most people make do not have a lot to do with improving their health, or for that matter, improving their lives. Your first choice of the day starts with the mental question: “How do I feel this morning?” You can choose to say “I feel great!!” and jump out of bed, or you can say: “I want to lie around for another hour, I’m tired, I don’t want to go to work.” As you start your day, so your day will go. It is your decision. In the section; spiritual health and wellness, I will address some of these issues. Just a slight “attitude adjustment” will change your life. A positive mental attitude is one of the best healers in the world, a key in disease prevention, and it is within your power to either encourage that attitude, or not. A positive attitude will affect what choices you make for each day: • Did I wake up grateful for what I have? (You know, little things, like: I can see, I can hear, I can walk) • What will I eat? • Will I work out before work, at lunch, or after work? • How will I enhance, or improve someone else’s day? • How will I contribute to my workplace in a positive way? • How will I end this great day? You see, we are the main creators of the world we live in, we make the decisions we want to about pretty much everything. The Goal Of This Section All of the foregoing may seem like I am “off the track” for disease prevention, but I’m not. Positive Attitude is so important in disease prevention, that I can’t say it enough. I will, however, get to the core of this section now. In this area, I will help you to understand how important your choices are, both for yourself, and for your family. The majority of the disease in the world centers around poor nutrition: how you eat, and what you eat. You can go to healthy foods
(Healthy Foods)
, to get an idea of what that means. In this section, I won’t go too far into some of the details about nutritional necessities, like vitamins, minerals and supplements
(Vitamins and Minerals)
. I will mention what has been proven to work in those areas, and invite you to browse around to other sections of this site for more information. As a reminder, everything throughout the whole site is backed up by solid scientific research. It is not speculation, it is all about helping you to make better choices, and helping you to take an active role in disease prevention. If at any time you need substantiation of a particular item, feel free to contact us and we will do our best to refer you to the relevant study(ies).
A Natural Life, Or A Drugged Life? One way leads to a lifetime of good health, where you have the ability to enjoy every single minute of your life. The other leads to drug dependency, and, in most cases, dependency on others to care for you when you are older. Which would you rather do? America’s health is failing. We spend far more per person, on health care than any other society in the world, and yet two thirds of Americans are overweight, and over 15 million Americans have diabetes, a number that has been rising rapidly, now, even in our children. We don’t do very much with disease prevention, just with treating the symptoms of the disease we already have, usually as a result of our nutritional habits. We fall prey to heart disease as often as we did thirty years ago, and the “war” on cancer, launched in the 1970’s, has been a miserable failure. Over half of Americans have a health problem that requires taking a prescription drug every week, and over 100 million Americans have high cholesterol. All of this, and I haven’t even mentioned the 60% of Americans who are overweight. We are number 38 in health out of all the developed countries in the world…38th! Do you think something is wrong with this picture?? We did not have these major health issues early in the 20th century, at least not affecting such a large segment of the population. In 1900, only 1 in 7 people died of cardiovascular disease, and only 1 in 30 died of cancer.
In 1988, the U.S. Surgeon General’s report on Nutrition and Health concluded that 15 out of every 21 deaths, (more than 2/3) in the U.S. involve nutrition. More than two thirds! In other words, disease prevention is strongly tied to nutrition. What changed between the early 1900’s and the end of the same century? Not the environment, not your genes, not an epidemic of “new diseases” caused by some unknown force. What changed is how our food is grown, processed, and delivered, and how we have become a “cash cow” for businesses like the food industry and the pharmaceutical industry. We have simply become very apathetic, content to sit and watch mindless TV programs, “charge it” when we ran out of money, and let others determine our future. I know that is a pretty strong statement, but it is true. The numbers tell it all. And, the most incredible part of this is that we like to think of ourselves as an “educated” society, yet we have gone backwards in the very areas that we needed to go forward in: nutrition and disease prevention. If you listen to all of the advertisers in the market place, they will tell you that everything is great! The drug manufacturers will also paint this rosy picture of a future with no disease! Well, things are NOT great in the nutrition industry, just in the financial part of it, and, the majority of the drugs on the market (which we pay from 75% to 200% more for in the U.S. than other countries pay), just cover up the symptoms of the disease, but do not actually cure it. But, everything is great in the drug industry also, on the financial end. What's NOT great, is our health. Drugs are not a “cure-all”, and there is not a pill that will be like the fountain of youth that some people seem to be waiting for. Drugs cover up the symptoms of the disease. They are about as far from disease prevention as you can get. America has always been a leader. Do we really want to be known as the world’s leader in bad health? Because right now, we are.
One Person’s Story About Disease Prevention And Natural Products “2.5 years ago, I decided that I could no longer deal with my anxiety and depression problems and went to the Dr. to seek a pharmaceutical "cure". I had also been fighting with my weight since the birth of my daughter 3 yrs. prior to that, I specifically asked my doctor for a medication that would not cause me to gain weight. I was given Paxil™. To its credit, it did help me deal with my anxiety and depression spiral but at what cost? I gained an additional 30 pounds over 2.5 years (very common with SSRIs) and experienced intense itching and fatigue. After speaking to my Dr. about these symptoms, we both finally came to the conclusion that it was the Paxil™ causing these things and my Dr. recommended I go a different medication. I elected not to try another drug, and decided to perform my own research to see if there was another non-drug alternative. What I found was that depression, anxiety and bipolar disorders are often caused by a lack of Omega 3 intake. As I had tried the pharmaceutical route and been displeased with all the side effects, I decided to give Omega 3 supplements a try. Paxil™ is an insidious medication. Once on it you must taper yourself off of it or you risk all kinds of nasty side effects - suicidal thoughts being the worst. Having been without my medication for 4 days in the past I can attest that the withdrawal is awful. I tapered (taking 1/2 doses, every other day) my Paxil™ intake for 2 weeks. At that time my omega-3s arrived and as my research had shown that Omega 3 supplements could help accelerate the withdrawal process w/o side effects I decided to give it a try - to stop tapering and withdraw cold turkey on my Paxil™. I would not recommend this as it is risky but as I know my body and how it reacted under Paxil™ withdrawal, I knew that if I experienced certain withdrawal symptoms I needed to get back on the tapering schedule. I have taken my omega-3s religiously every day. I am elated to report that I never needed to resume my Paxil™ tapering schedule. I'm Paxil™ free. AND - I have tons more energy, my anxiety level is normal (I was diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder before) so I think this is fabulous. I've also begun to lose weight. I cannot recommend this product enough. It gave me my life back and for the first time in years I feel...hopeful and ready to greet each new day.” Maggie For more information on disease preventing Omega-3 supplements, and a company that produces one without the danger of heavy metals, go to

Where Do I Start? Here are some simple beginning steps for disease prevention: • Start with your diet, what you eat every day. Really look at it; • Eat more fruit and fiber, again, go organic if you can; • Start planning nutritious meals and snacks. You can go to cookbooks and recipes on this site for some suggestions; • If you are taking drugs, go to a book store or the library and look up the drugs to see how they will affect your health, and how they may interact with your food. • Commit to a simple exercise program, like walking every day at a good pace; doing yoga or aerobics or join a local gym; • Turn off the TV for the majority of the day and evening; •Read a good book or get more involved in a social group or volunteer organization or your church. Does Diet Really Make That Much of A Difference in disease prevention? YES! More and more research is showing that the western diet, is causing the majority of the illnesses and diseases. We are simply not getting the correct balance of nutrients that we need to be healthy, to have healthy immune systems and to help with disease prevention. Even though there is a lot of information out there, and a lot of opinions as to the “best” way to eat, most people are confused, and very few people truly know what they should be doing to improve their health. A good diet is the most powerful weapon we have against sickness and the best road to disease prevention. For more information, go to

Disease Prevention
(Disease Prevention)
is one of those subjects that could go on and on, as you can see by this section! The main piece of information that I want everyone to get out of this area is: how important your diet, what you eat everyday, is to your long term health. You will get older, and how you want to spend that time, after working for 30 to 40 years, depends on what you do now and for the rest of your life. Even if you are in your 50s, 60s, 70s or 80s, it is never too late to undo at least some of the damage. Our bodies are remarkable in their ability to heal and repair themselves. Look for more information in our newsletter and other sections of this site. Also, look under the specific disease for information, for example: Prostate Health, Arthritis, Eye Health, Diabetes, etc. I will be adding to each section on a regular basis.
