Your Amazing Heart!

Most of us just go through our lives never thinking about what automatically goes on inside of us, without us even thinking about it.

Our heart is a great example. The only time we are aware of it is when it breaks down through heart disease, a heart attack, or a stroke. Here are some interesting facts about our “pump” that operates inside of our chest. After reading this, you may want to just place your hand over your heart, and say: “thank you!”

Your heart:

• Pumps an average of 5 gallons of blood every minute; a total of 1800 GALLONS a day.

• Each year, your heart pumps an average of 657,000 gallons of blood; enough to fill 7 swimming pools measuring 50 feet by 25 feet by 10 feet deep! Or, enough to fill 1950 average bathtubs a year.

• In the average 70 year lifetime, your heart will beat 2.5 BILLION times, and pump 50,960,000 gallons of blood (yes, that’s almost 51 million gallons!)

• Every 20 seconds, your blood has circulated through your entire vascular system;

• Your blood vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries), if linked together, would measure more than 60,000 miles, enough to circle the earth twice!

• Your largest blood vessels are as wide as a garden hose, and the smallest are so tiny that blood cells travel through them single file!

All of this tireless work is done without our knowledge, by our “pump” that weighs less than 10 ounces, and is about the size of your two fists.

Our job, to keep our heart healthy and trouble free, is to make sure we are eating a healthy diet, exercising, keeping our weight down, and keep our stress levels down through breathing and meditation. It goes without saying that smoking is in the “not to do” category for good heart and body health.
